Therapeutic Health Services, Atlantic Street Center and Seattle Parks & Recreation will host a celebration of Juneteenth on Friday, June 17 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.,. at the Rainier Beach Community Center (8825 Rainier Avenue South).
Juneteenth commemorates the true ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers under the leadership of Major General Gordon Grander arrived in Galveston and notified those under the yoke of slavery that they were free. This took place two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
This free and fun event is open to all youth and families in the local community.
The Juneteenth celebration will feature live performances, food, games, prizes, and a community resource fair. Current community resource fair participants include the Crisis Clinic, the Low Income Housing Institute, the Graham Street Community Service Office, Hopelink, AARTH Ministries, the Rainier Branch of the Seattle Public Library, DESC, the Seattle Fire Department, the Seattle Police Department, Safe Place, Solid Ground and NetZero.
